Real Life: Stranger Than Fiction

I had a bit of fun looking up some technical report abstracts available on the web. Here's some results of my delvings.

Cellular Phones and Prozac

Thie report claims that microwaves at 800 MHz interfere with synaptic membranes in rat brains. Depending on channel allocation, I believe 800 MHz was the high end of the bandwidth allocated towards analog cellular phones. This report found that microwave radiation could decrease the serotonin neurons in the brain. This report corroborates the neurological effect of microwave radiation upon serotonin function, and is indexed under the major subject term "neurotic depression". This report claims microwaves heating at 1.6 GHz resulted in a decrease in hippocampal serotonin in rats. Although the exposure levels are much smaller, is it plausible that the widespread use of cellular phones, which operate at microwave frequencies, may have led to an increase in the incidence of depression? Prozac and related antidepressants are SSRIs, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors; these drugs boost the levels of serotonin in the brain. Broadcast depression. Shades of mind control. Maybe the crazies wearing aluminum foil on their heads were on to something.

Voices in the Head

This report claims that pulsed microwave radiation can cause audible sound to appear to originate within or just behind the head in human subjects. Just to thing to give orders to religious schizophrenics. Persinger has proposed a theory that most genuine UFO phenomena are natural events, generated by geomagnetic effects of stresses and strains within the earth's crust. Furthermore, Persinger reports that he has been able to experimentally induce in human volunteers a sense of "a presence" via very weak but complex electromagnetic fields. Combine these two and one can theoretically induce a religious or otherworldly experience complete with commands. Who needs faith when you can program in an experience?
